Three Victorians medal in Women’s Artistic Continental Championships.

Amongst an array of thrilling performances at last week’s Australian Gymnastics Championships, three Victorian gymnasts participated in double the action as they represented Australia in the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics component of the 2022 Continental Championships.

Victorian gymnasts Emily Whitehead, Kate McDonald and Romi Brown were joined by Lucy Stewart (NSW) and Olena Edmeades (WA) to make up a team of five to contest New Zealand in the cross-Tasman competition.

Four apparatuses were included in the WAG competition, giving our athletes several chances to medal as they performed across Floor, Uneven Bars, Beam and Vault. The final team score was calculated by taking the three top scores on each apparatus, per team.

Australia were victorious, surpassing New Zealand with an overall score of 156.029. Below is the breakdown of the apparatus scores that gave that total.

Vault: 40.433
Uneven Bars: 39.232
Beam: 39.665
Floor: 36.669

In terms of individual accolades, Kate McDonald took two Silver medals home in Beam and Uneven Bars. McDonald placed second in Uneven Bars only to another Victorian gymnast, Romi Brown, who took home the Gold medal. Brown also claimed medals in Floor and All-Around, both being Bronze.

Victoria’s third gymnast to medal was Emily Whitehead, who received one of each medal; Bronze in Beam, Silver in All Around and a shining Gold medal in Floor.

With this win, Australia had a clean sleep and were the overall winners in MAG, WAG and Rhythmic for this year’s Continental Championships over New Zealand.

Congratulations to all gymnasts involved in this years Continental Championships. Keep an eye out on our social media channels - @gymnasticsvictoriaofficial, for updates on the next big competition; The Commonwealth Games.
