International Day of People with Disabilities
Tuesday 3 December is International Day of People with Disabilities.
It was a day to show appreciation and to celebrate the achievements and contributions of people living with disabilities, appreciating diversity and recognising the value of all Australians.
Since 1992 the day has helped shine a focus on addressing discrimination and exclusion by creating inclusive and accessible communities to promote the importance of the well-being and welfare of all.
Gymnastics Victoria are committed to making sure everyone has equal opportunity to participate in an active and accessible lifestyle and are excited to be supporting the International Day of People with Disabilities.
Yesterday Gymnastics Victoria alongside Waverley Gymnastics Centre and the Highett Youth Club attended the Disability Sport and Recreation Festival and we are looking forward to attending the Variety Children’s Christmas Party on Thursday 5 December.
Disability Sport and Recreation Festival
The Disability Sport and Recreation Festival marked the International Day of People with Disability, taking place on Tuesday 3 December at Crown Riverwalk.
The family-friendly community event first began in 2010 to promote active lifestyles and positive health outcomes for Victorians of all abilities.
It offered everyone the chance to learn about and experience inclusive sport and exercise options through a variety of fun and challenging activities paired with information sharing.
This year’s festival included three different activity zones that give you the chance to try these sports first-hand with thirty exhibitors each offering exciting information about their inclusive programs.
Thank you to everyone who attended and met Gymnastics Victoria between 10am and 3pm to learn more about the inclusive programs we provide and to those who joined us between 10am and 10:45am in Activity Zone 1 and got involved in an activity.

Variety Children’s Christmas Party
The Variety Children’s Christmas Party will be happening on Thursday 5 December at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
This event brings the joy of Christmas to children with a disability or terminal illness and has touched the lives of children in need across Victoria.
Variety gives children and their families, who aren’t always in a position to celebrate Christmas due to illness, special needs, disadvantage or lack of support, a special day where each child feels accepted, safe and free from judgement or exclusion.
The celebration includes carnival rides, activities, entertainment, an animal farm, and a visit from Santa. Giving children the chance to enjoy themselves and the magic of Christmas with their families.
The annual event began in 1986 and this year the event is expected to welcome up to 5000 children and 3000 carers.
Gymnastics Victoria will be there from 10am with supporting clubs, Waverley Gymnastics Club, BTYC, Casey Gymnastics, and Aerosport All Stars, to talk with parents and support children to complete the gymnastics circuit.
