Australia impressed on the world stage at the Gymnastics World Cup in Melbourne with Victorian Alexandra Eade claiming a Gold Medal on Floor and local teammate Emily Whitehead picking up a Silver Medal on Vault.
The Floor Final was held on Sunday 25 February and NCE Melbourne’s Alex nailed her last tumble pass to lock in a score of 13.333 which was met with tremendous applause.
Alex credited the crowd for helping her put in such a strong performance.
“I can’t even describe the feeling of having every one screaming and cheering for me, it’s just phenomenal,” Eade said, whilst also crediting Australia’s new Woman’s Artistic Gymnastics National Coach Mihai Brestyan - for recent improvements in her strength and fitness.
“It’s been a long time since I was competing on the international level, so it was great to nail both the Qualifiers and Finals and come away with a win.”
The Women’s Vault Final was held on Saturday 24 February and Waverley Gymnastics Centre’s Emily Whitehead put in a solid performance sticking both her landings for an overall score of 13.69.
Emily is proud of the preparation she put in to the Silver Medal result and deems Saturday’s performance as one of her best.
"This is definitely a very big (accomplishment). It's probably one of my biggest. My second vault (routine) is pretty new so it was kind of like a bit of a test run to see how it goes."
Former NCE Melbourne Gymnast Georgia-Rose Brown also competed on Uneven Bars on Saturday and claimed a Bronze Medal.
In total Australia amassed 8 Medals at the Melbourne Gymnastics World Cup including two Gold, two Silver and four Bronze.
With the Melbourne Gymnastics World Cup now complete, the focus is on the Commonwealth Games Team Selection which will take place on Wednesday 28 February.
Gymnastics Victoria congratulate all of our Australian gymnasts on an excellent World Cup campaign and particularly applaud Alex, Emily and Georgia-Rose on their performances.
